MEMORANDUM IN AN AREA OF THE HYDROGEN USAGE IN TRANSPORT

5.8. 2019 Diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) used in public transport, specifically buses, in Ústí nad Labem are expected to be replaced by hydrogen in the future. The city council endorsed signing a memorandum in an area of the hydrogen usage for environmentally friendly transport with Spolchemie, bus transit agency in Ústí nad Labem and Cheminvest. If the funding for a refuelling station and procurement of buses are successfully obtained, the very first vehicles propelled by hydrogen may be in service as soon as in 2021, said Petr Nedvědický (ANO), the mayor of Ústí nad Labem.

12.2. 2020 – Ústí nad Labem earned funding for construction of one hydrogen refuelling station. It is going to be located at the chemical plant, which generates hydrogen as a by-product in its production processes. Hydrogen, as an ecologically clean energy carrier, is going to be made available for use for buses in public transport and possibly for the public as well. Petr Nedvědický delivered this news to journalists today.

Ústí nad Labem outlines in its concept of sustainable mobility the expectations that its public transport fleets will consist exclusively of eco-friendly trolleybuses and buses all propelled by hydrogen in the future. In practice, it will mean that 80 buses, which the bus transit agency currently has at its disposal, will need to be replaced. There is a sufficient supply of hydrogen in Ústí nad Labem due to Spolchemie, a local chemical manufacturer, which produces it. Hydrogen gas is generated as a waste product from membrane electrolysis during the chlorine and hydroxides production processes. “Nowadays, the chemical factory uses hydrogen for heat,” added Nedvědický.
